Understanding people and perceptions
My research and consultancy work focuses on people’s connections with nature and the outdoors. I recently completed interview-based visitor surveys for the National Trust’s Longshaw Estate and the Eastern Moors Partnership, collecting and analysing demographic data and personal perceptions from people who spend leisure time in the moorland, woods and parkland on the eastern side of the Peak District.
Assisted by volunteers from both organisations, the survey captured data from 1000 visitor groups, representing 2750 individuals. My analysis and conclusions improved the organisations’ understanding of visitor demographics, activities and preferences, to help inform future management plans.
I’ve previously carried out similar research for RSPB reserves at Dove Stone, near Oldham in Greater Manchester, and Fairburn Ings in the Lower Aire Valley, West Yorkshire. These are sites with very different visitor profiles, where the RSPB was developing or expanding its management remit. My research provided valuable insights into visitors’ needs and expectations.
